The European Space Agency (ESA) is set to take part in the 76th International Astronautical Congress (IAC), which will commence on September 29 and run through October 3 in Sydney, Australia. Anticipation surrounds the event, which expects to draw over 8,000 attendees from approximately 90 nations at the International Convention Centre, focusing on the theme “Sustainable Space: Resilient Earth.”

ESA’s exhibition, titled “European Space Agency: Elevating the Future of Europe,” will be open throughout the conference at stand 671. It will present the agency’s recent mission outcomes and future aspirations, aligned with ESA’s Strategy 2040, which emphasizes five key objectives: safeguarding the planet and climate, exploring for knowledge, enhancing European autonomy, promoting economic growth and competitiveness, and inspiring future generations. As part of the build-up to the upcoming ESA Ministerial Council session in November in Bremen, Germany, the exhibition aims to illustrate the pivotal role of space initiatives in driving economic prosperity, scientific progress, national security, and societal resilience.

The ESA booth will host a variety of discussions and presentations focused on aspects such as space transportation, international cooperation in space, commercialization opportunities, the burgeoning space economy, and educational outreach. Attendees will have the chance to engage with ESA specialists, including astronaut Andreas Mogensen.

The programming for the week kicks off with an opening ceremony on September 29 at 9:30 AM AEST, alongside a high-profile discussion featuring heads of various space agencies later that day. Notable leaders expected to participate include Josef Aschbacher, Director General of ESA, and representatives from NASA, the Canadian Space Agency, and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, among others. Additionally, there are scheduled contract signings and various panels aimed at fostering international collaboration.

The IAC offers a distinctive venue for reinforcing partnerships within the space community, integrating ESA’s member states, global collaborators, and industry stakeholders. The conference will facilitate strategic initiatives that aim to improve cooperation with Australia on space missions, explore joint ventures with New Zealand, support ASEAN nations, and advance partnerships with countries such as India, South Korea, and Canada.

The ESA exhibition will also feature important mission updates related to climate crisis responses and planetary defense. Among the highlights will be displays of five significant future missions, including advancements in Earth observation and navigation, and the HydroGNSS initiative aimed at improving our understanding of the Earth’s water cycle.

ESA’s active engagement at the IAC underscores its commitment to fostering sustainable space exploration while inspiring the next generation of space professionals.
