SpaceX is preparing for its upcoming Transporter-16 mission, which will see 119 payloads launched into a Sun-synchronous orbit from California. This mission forms part of SpaceX’s SmallSat Rideshare Program, which has gained a reputation for offering satellite operators an efficient and value for your money alternative to dedicated launch services. The launch is slated to take place during a 57-minute window that opens at 3:20 AM PDT (10:20 UTC) on Monday, March 30, from Space Launch Complex 4 East at Vandenberg Space Force Base.

The Falcon 9 rocket will follow a southern trajectory as it ascends from Vandenberg. After launch, the first stage booster—designated B1093—will be recovered by SpaceX’s droneship, Of Course I Still Love You, positioned offshore in the Pacific Ocean. The booster, now on its twelfth mission, has previously supported multiple Starlink missions and other payload deployments.

Once the upper stage achieves the targeted Sun-synchronous orbit, it will perform a series of four engine burns before initiating the deployment of payloads at approximately 55 minutes post-launch, with the process expected to conclude around 2 hours and 31 minutes into the flight. The array of payloads will include various sizes of satellites, such as picosatellites, nanosatellites, and an orbital service vehicle, with Exolaunch being the largest customer on this mission, contributing a total of 57 payloads.

Exolaunch, a German firm, has been a recurring participant in SpaceX’s rideshare endeavors since the program’s launch in 2020, successfully delivering over 670 satellites to orbit. For Transporter-16, they’re facilitating launch access for more than 25 different entities, including companies, governmental organizations, and academic institutions. This mission will feature 26 microsatellites and 31 cubesats among its payloads.

Among the notable payloads is the Femto-1 satellite, developed by EnduroSat, which will test a high-efficiency electric propulsion system through a series of maneuvers once in orbit. Another participant, Aethero Space, is sending Phobos, a 4U microsatellite intended to showcase on-orbit data center technologies equipped with an Nvidia computing module, providing unprecedented computing capabilities in space.

The payloads will also include the Compact Spaceborne Magnetic Observatory (COSMO) from the University of Colorado, which aims to enhance global models of Earth’s magnetic field through detailed measurements collected by its onboard magnetometer. Greek technology will be represented with satellites like Ermis-1 and Ermis-2, which are aimed at Earth observation, along with Ermis-3, featuring private sector connectivity technologies, and PeakSat, developed by students to demonstrate optical communication methods.

Student-led projects are also part of the manifest, such as Disco-2, a CubeSat from Aarhus University and its partners, monitoring climate impacts in the Arctic, and TORO3, which continues the development of satellites capable of monitoring marine ecosystems.

Extending beyond Exolaunch, SEOPS (Space Exploration Operations) is another significant contributor, managing a total of 19 payloads for various clients across 13 countries. Noteworthy participants include Alba Orbital, which will deploy five PocketQubes on this mission, and several universities participating in regional satellite projects.

Momentus Inc. will employ its Orbital Service Vehicle, Vigoride-7, to carry 10 different payloads, including NASA’s R5-S10 and DARPA’s NOM4D, showcasing innovative in-space assembly technologies and manufacturing techniques.

As the demand for affordable access to space remains high, SpaceX’s dedicated rideshare missions like Transporter-16 continue to provide a high number of organizations with opportunities to achieve their satellite objectives, having already facilitated over 1,600 satellites into orbit since the initiative began.
