The Film Adaptation Of “Andromeda Strain” Hit Theaters In 1971

On this date in 1971 the Astrobiology / Planetary Protection – themed film “Andromeda Strain” had begun playing in theaters.

The film was based on the late Michael Crichton’s thriller novel first published in 1969. This first film adaptation was very true to the initial book in terms of plot, pacing, and overall intent.

However, in 2008, a mini-series adaptation which deviated significantly from the original novel aired on the SyFy channel. This mini series was made to last much longer to sell TV advertising. It is simply not worth watching.
