SpaceX unveils Ship 39 as it advances the Starship program with Block 3 enhancements

The latest iteration of SpaceX’s Starship program is taking shape with the introduction of Ship 39, the first vehicle from the newly designated Block 3. This evolution builds on the experiences and data gathered from previous test flights, specifically the SN8 to SN15 phases, incorporating valuable insights while maintaining the core strengths of Block 2.

Currently situated at Massey’s for what appears to be an igniter test, Ship 39 has undergone engine swaps following its previous six-engine static fire. Although its current testing phase does not directly indicate an impending launch, preparations are ramping up with scheduled road and beach closures on May 17 and May 18 in anticipation of a substantial Wet Dress Rehearsal. Specific details surrounding the necessity of this additional testing remain unclear, but it likely reflects SpaceX’s commitment to ensuring that all systems are functioning at their best.

The design of Block 3 does not constitute a sweeping overhaul compared to its predecessor; yet it introduces several enhancements. For starters, the nose cone has retained much of its external appearance but features important updates, including high-pressure outlet lines that suggest the inclusion of at least 32 composite overwrapped pressure vessels. These advancements aim to better accommodate the requirements of the Raptor 3 engines while enhancing overall efficiency in orbit.

Significantly, there are modifications to the catch and lift points on Ship 39’s nose cone, with the new design eliminating ship pin sockets that had previously been used for handling the spacecraft. This change anticipates future catch operations using the chopstick mechanism as soon as Flight 41, contingent on successful earlier launches.

Noteworthy adjustments extend to the payload section, now featuring passive docking ports designed for propellant transfer between vessels, with the active side projected for testing in future flights. Additionally, new vents located in the payload bay are expected to facilitate pressure equalization prior to door operations. Enhancements to the propellant tanks have also been implemented, allowing increased volumes without raising the vehicle’s overall height, achieved by modifying the tank domes.

The aft section has seen substantial upgrades as well, with the introduction of an improved quick-disconnect plate intended to facilitate in-space refueling. The redesign of the Reaction Control Systems enhances maneuverability, incorporating more thrusters strategically positioned to optimize performance in orbit.

Further refinements have been made to the avionics and battery capabilities, extending the ship’s operational duration to 48 hours. This enhancement enables a range of activities, including launching, docking, fuel transfer, and return to Earth.

Another major focus of the Block 3 redesign is the heat shield, which has seen an overhaul with a new tile pin structure aimed at improving sealing during reentry. Changes to tile arrangements, including the elimination of horizontal seams on the nose cone, reflect ongoing efforts to improve the vehicle’s thermal protection capabilities.

While the overall configuration of the aft flaps remains unchanged, modifications to the tile layout aim to reduce reliance on glued tiles in favor of a pinned system. SpaceX is currently exploring a new adhesive for tile attachment on specific areas of Ship 39, pending the results of ongoing tests.

The culmination of these advancements collectively positions SpaceX to not only perfect this variant of Starship but to lay the groundwork for future iterations, including tanker, cargo, and crewed missions, as well as specialized Starlink applications. As preparations intensify for upcoming flight tests, the evolution embodied in Block 3 underscores SpaceX’s ambitious vision for space exploration and transportation.
