The European Space Agency (ESA) has teamed up with the French video game developer DON’T NOD Entertainment to launch “Aphelion,” an innovative narrative video game that invites players to venture into the depths of space exploration. Released on April 28, the game is available on multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
In “Aphelion,” players assume the roles of ESA astronauts Ariane Montclair and Thomas Cross as they embark on the fictional Hope-01 mission to the newly imagined ninth planet, Persephone. The game’s storyline blends imaginative elements with scientific authenticity, thanks to the close collaboration between ESA and DON’T NOD. Experts from ESA provided valuable insights throughout the game’s development, lending authenticity to aspects such as scientific terminology, physics, and sound design, which enhances the overall gaming experience while remaining rooted in real-life space missions.
Moreover, “Aphelion” seeks to extend its narrative beyond typical gameplay through various storytelling formats. An immersive experience is complemented by a dedicated mission page on the ESA website outlining the details of the Hope-01 mission, along with an exclusive mission patch to commemorate the launch. This strategy aims to forge a stronger connection between gameplay and real-world space activities, emphasizing the project’s educational and inspirational objectives.
This collaboration marks a pivotal moment, as it’s the first instance where a science-fiction game prominently equipped with a ESA mission and astronauts in realistic scenarios as part of its core narrative. By blending cultural engagement with scientific education, the project aligns with ESA’s Strategy 2040 goals, focusing on themes such as exploration, innovation, and awareness of pressing global issues like climate change.
Anne-Sophie Bradelle, Head of ESA’s Communication Department, emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, “This collaboration reflects ESA’s ambition to work closely with creative partners to share the reality and values of space exploration in engaging ways.” She noted that the immersive storytelling potential of the project could inspire future generations to pursue careers in space—a necessity as ESA plans to recruit over 400 new personnel in 2026.
Oskar Guilbert, CEO of DON’T NOD, expressed pride in the partnership with ESA, highlighting its mission to foster awareness of sustainability and inclusivity through video games. “ESA has placed humanity, sustainability, and inclusivity at the heart of its mission,” he noted, emphasizing the unique opportunity to raise awareness of vital space initiatives through the engaging narrative of “Aphelion.”
With “Aphelion,” ESA is exploring the intersection of science, creativity, and interactive storytelling, further igniting enthusiasm for space exploration while enriching European cultural narratives.
